A temple of the Tozan school of Shingon Buddhism, this site is the 20th station of the old Kojima Domain's 33 Stations of Kannon Pilgrimage. The grounds house a standing statue of Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha) in the Seiryuji style from the late Kamakura period and a standing statue of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon) from the late Heian period.

The founding date is unknown, though it has been suggested that it may date back to before 1816. The temple was once closed around 1921 (Taisho 10) but was later re-established as the current Shinbukuji through the merger of standing statues and other items transferred from other closed temples. In 1874 (Meiji 7), the Eba Gakusha school was relocated here, which later became Yamauchi Elementary School.
