Susanoo-no-Mikoto

History

Until the Meiji era, it was said to enshrine Futsunomitama, the sword used by Susanoo-no-Mikoto when he slayed the Yamata-no-Orochi (Eight-Forked Serpent). The shrine's founding is attributed to the enshrinement of the To-gakuken (Ten-Grip Sword), which was transferred to Isonokami Jingū in Yamato Province during the reign of Emperor Nintoku. In 1873 (Meiji 6), it was classified as a Kōsha (Provincial Shrine), and in the same year, the enshrined deity was changed to Susanoo-no-Mikoto.
