Because the enshrined deity, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, was identified with Gyozan Tenno (Bull-headed Heavenly King), the shrine was also called Tenno Shrine. Prior to the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism, Susanoo-no-Mikoto was viewed as identical to Gyozan Tenno.
