Kamine Shrine

Located in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, this shrine consists of a foothill sanctuary (Satomiya) and an inner sanctuary (Okunomiya) at the summit of Mount Kamine. During major festivals, a puppet theater performance using floats known as 'Hitachi Furyumono' is offered; this tradition is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

History
The founding date is unknown, but it is believed that the deities were enshrined at the summit of Mount Kamine during the Muromachi period. In 1688, when the deities were moved back to the summit, a foothill sanctuary (Satomiya) was built at the current location of the worship hall to alleviate the inconvenience of pilgrimage. In 1695, by order of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the shrine became the head guardian shrine for the Miyata, Aise, and Sukegawa areas.
