History

According to shrine tradition, its origins date back to the reign of Emperor Keikō, when Oimochiwake ordered the clan members of the Toshi-be to enshrine Amaterasu-no-Mikoto (Ame-no-Hohi-no-Mikoto). It was initially known as Iso-bu Myōjin. In the second year of Bunji (1186 CE), Kiryu Tsunamoto repaired the shrine buildings. In the first year of Kan'ō (1350 CE), his grandson, Kunitsunao, relocated the shrine to its current site and established a branch shrine of Kitano Tenmangū, which became known as Tenmangū. During the Edo period, it served as the general guardian deity of the 54 villages in the Kiryu domain and as a place of prayer for the Tokugawa family.
