History
The Upper Shinmeisha is said to have been founded in 1701 CE (Genroku 14), while the Lower Shinmeisha is said to have been established in 807 CE. Due to the merit of Date Masamune's conquest of Shiogama Castle, Katakurako Juro was granted land, and the shrine was revered as the guardian of Shiogama Castle. It was revived in 1877 CE (Meiji 10). After being destroyed by the Great Shiogama Fire, the main hall (honden) was constructed in 1878 CE (Meiji 11) at its current location (the site of the Second Enclosure of Shiogama Castle).

What visitors say
The shrine grounds are spacious, and facilities such as the worship hall (haiden) and torii gates are impressive, creating a serene atmosphere. The offering hall offers a wide variety of omamori (protective amulets) and ema (votive tablets), and the Goshuin (shrine seal stamp) is sometimes written directly by the shrine priest. Located near Shiogama Castle, it is an ideal place to visit in conjunction with sightseeing in the surrounding area.
