History
During the reign of Emperor Daigo, a resident of the northern village of the Ujigami Awagami (the Imperial Granary of Awaji) requested permission to invite the kami of Ise Jingū (Ise Grand Shrine). This request was granted by imperial decree, and in 924 CE (Enchō 2), the kami was first enshrined at Awaji Shrine. Shortly thereafter, a new main hall was constructed at the current site, and the kami was transferred there. In 1192 CE (Kenkyū 3), Minamoto no Yoritomo granted the position of Ryōka (estate manager) of this shrine to his sister, Ichijō Nobu. The Edo Shogunate contributed a fief of 100 koku (a unit of rice-based income), and in 1871 CE (Meiji 4), the shrine was elevated to the rank of Kenja (Prefectural Shrine).
