Located in Sotokanda, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, this shrine's official name is Kanda Shrine. It is revered as the 'Head Guardian Shrine of Edo' and serves as the tutelary deity for 108 neighborhoods, including Kanda, Nihonbashi, Akihabara, Otemachi, and Marunouchi. The enshrined deities (kami) are Okuninushi-no-Mikoto (Daikoku-sama), Sukuna-hikona-no-Mikoto (Ebisu-sama), and Taira no Masakado-no-Mikoto. Legend states it was founded in 730 CE (Tenpyo 2) by the Makagata clan of the Izumo lineage. During the Sengoku period, the shrine was relocated to its current vicinity. In the Edo period, it received strong protection from the Tokugawa shogunate as the guardian of the 'Kimon' (northeastern evil direction) of Edo Castle. The Kanda Matsuri (festival) was one of the 'Tenka Matsuri' (festivals of the realm), alongside the Sanno Matsuri, boasting the prestige of having its mikoshi (portable shrine) enter Edo Castle itself. The shrine will celebrate its 1300th anniversary in 2025 CE (Reiwa 7).
