The temple's predecessor was Hasedo-san Daiji-ji, founded by Tamura Muneyoshi, the lord of Iwanuma Domain, in Iwanuma. When Tamura Takiake moved to Ichinoseki in 1683 CE (Tenna 2), the temple's location and name were changed. It is said that the founder was Princess Fuyo and the founding abbot was Zen master Doki En'ou from Matsushima Zuigan-ji. The main buildings were destroyed in a fire during the Meiji era, but the Hasedo Kannon Hall and the Tenrin Issai-kyo-jo (storehouse for the Tenrin Issai-kyo sutras) survived the disaster.
