明治天皇の詔勅を賜り、1879年に戊辰戦争の西軍従軍者や西南戦争の福島県出身の戦死者を合祀し、官祭信夫山招魂社として創建された。1937年に現在の社殿が造営され、1939年には内務大臣指定護国神社となった。戦後の神道指令により一時「大霊神社」と改名されたが、1952年に「福島縣護國神社」の名称を復した。
