The temple is said to have begun when Tokuitsu built the Kuzujou Hall in 807 CE (Doutou 2) to enshrine a Kuzujou Bosatsu statue crafted by Kukai. Enzouji was subsequently established as the head temple. During the Northern and Southern Courts period, it was converted to the Rinzai sect. In the Edo period, it briefly belonged to the Shingon sect but returned to the Rinzai sect in 1627. The Oku-no-in Benten-do (Inner Sanctuary Benten Hall) was built during the Muromachi period and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
