Founded in 1331 when Yamagaya Moriyoshi invited the monk Yukimura Yumei to establish the temple. It was revived in the early Edo period by the Soto Zen master Ashimura Masamori and rebuilt in 1854. The temple was temporarily closed during the Meiji era but was restored in 1881 as Tokusei-ji. It adopted its current name, Tokun-ji, in 1935.
