The shrine was founded in 1378 when Zen master Ryoan enshrined a branch spirit (bunrei) from Akihaba Sanjubo Dai-Gongen in Tōtōmi Province. During the Edo period, it received the patronage of the hatamoto (samurai serving the shogun directly) Yamauchi Kazuyui, and the shrine buildings were renovated in 1661. By 1739, it had become a place of prayer for the Kishu Tokugawa family.
