The founding date is unknown, but oral tradition states that because a shining mirror was found at the summit of Mount Inane on the island, the ancestor of the shrine priests, Shirojuro, built a hall to enshrine it. In 852 CE (Kasho 5), the enshrined deity was granted the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, and two years later, the rank of Senior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade. The shrine buildings were constructed in 1695 CE (Genroku 8), and the main hall was renovated in 1902 CE (Meiji 35).
