Takemikazuchi-no-Okami

The shrine's origins date back to the first year of the Shinko-Kanun era (767 CE), when Takeukatsuchi-no-Mikoto, during a journey to invite the deity from Kashima Jingu (Kashima Grand Shrine) to Kasuga Shrine, arrived at this location and caused a persimmon tree to grow. During the reign of Emperor Kunyo, the shrine was granted a new main hall and the rank of Shu-Ichi-i (First Rank) for its successful prayers that brought heavy rain during a drought. In the Edo period, it became a bustling place as the junction of the Tokaido and Nakasendo roads, known as a site where feudal lords on their mandatory alternate attendance journeys prayed for safe travels.
