History
It is said that the shrine was founded when Take-mikazuchi-no-Mikoto arrived here during his journey of invitation from Kashima Jingu to Kasuga Shrine in 767 CE (Shinju-Kiun 1). During the reign of Emperor Kōnin, the shrine received the divine rank of Sho-Ichi-i and had its buildings constructed as thanks for bringing heavy rain in response to prayers for rain. During the Edo period, it flourished as a junction of the Tokaido and Nakasendo, known as a place where daimyo from various domains praying for safe travels during their sankin-kotai (alternate attendance) visits would stop.
