According to tradition, during the Tenpyo period (729–749 CE), Emperor Shomu issued an imperial edict for the monk Gyoji to carve the principal image, and the temple was named Kinmyoji. During the stay of Emperor Kameyama, a hall was built modeled after the Sanjusendogen (Thirty-Three Halls), and the temple's mountain name was changed.
