History
The temple's origins date back to 789 CE, when Kukai climbed the mountain seeking timber for the construction of Zentsu-ji Temple. He perceived this location as a sacred mountain and established a hall here. Although a fire in 1098 CE destroyed the entire mountain, a hunter named Yonari rebuilt it. The current main image was created during the era of Ganshi Shonin, the founder of the late Heian period revival. During the Kamakura period, the temple received the patronage of Sasaki Tsunetaka, and the seven-hall complex was completed.
