Shin'en, 68th Pilgrimage Site

日本、〒768-0061 香川県観音寺市八幡町1丁目2−7

4.1(114)

This is the 68th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and a temple located within the grounds of Kannonji Temple. It houses numerous cultural assets, including the Kannonji Temple Golden Hall (Kandō), a designated Important Cultural Property, and a wooden statue of the Nirvana Buddha.

History

During the Hōki era (701–704 CE), Nichishō of the Hosso school, while in training on Mount Kotozuru, enshrined the koto (Japanese harp) and boat seen in a vision of Hachiman Daimyōjin (the Great Deity of Hachiman), and established the temple as Shingūji Hōkōin. In 807 CE (Daidō 2), Kūkai entered the mountain, organized the Seven Halls and Monasteries (Shichidō Garan), and renamed it Shichibozan Kannonji. Later, the temple's name was changed to Shin'en.

What visitors say

This is a unique location where two temples, the 68th and 69th pilgrimage sites, are situated within a single precinct. The staircase leading to the main hall of Shin'en is surrounded by concrete, creating a distinctive space, but the main hall in the back is surrounded by trees and has a charming atmosphere. You can efficiently visit both pilgrimage sites, and there are several cafes in the surrounding area.
