It is said that Kukai, upon seeing a white snake, believed it to be a messenger of the Buddha and thus carved an image of the Buddha's Nirvana to establish the temple. After being destroyed by fire during the wars of the Tensho 10 era, it was relocated to its current site and rebuilt during the Shoho era. The abbot at the time, having attained enlightenment in the 'turning Dharma forest,' changed the mountain name and temple name to their current forms. The current main buildings were rebuilt during the Meiji era.
