The shrine is said to have been founded in 584 CE (Sushoku 12) when Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Chuai were enshrined at the foot of Mount Takao, with the enshrinement entrusted to Katsuragi Koto-maru. In 1186 CE (Bunji 2), the shrine was relocated to its current site. During the Edo period, it flourished as one of the major shrines of the Kokura Domain under the protection of the Hosokawa and Ogigawa clans. It was designated a village shrine in 1873 CE (Meiji 6) and elevated to the status of a prefectural shrine in 1927 CE (Shōwa 2).
