In the 18th year of the Jogan era of the Heian period, a shrine enshrining Ōkuninushi (Ōnamuchi) was established following a memorial submitted by the Bureau of Divinities and the Bureau of Yin and Yang. It is also said to have been founded by the Awata clan as their ancestral deity. During the Meiji era, it was renamed Awata Shrine and designated as a Prefectural Shrine (Fusha).

What visitors say
Located atop a small hill, the shrine grounds offer breathtaking views of Kyoto, including the torii gate of Heian Jingu (Heian Grand Shrine). Although the path up the slope is steep, the atmosphere is calm and serene. Goshuin (shrine seal stamps) and omamori (amulets) featuring sword motifs are also available.
