The temple is said to have originated in 1180 CE (Jōryaku 2), when a hall was built to enshrine Jirōkanzeon (Jirōkannon, the Eleven-Faced Kannon) to mourn the spirits of the Taira and Minamoto clans who died in the Genpei War. The temple burned down during Oda Nobunaga's invasion in 1571 CE (Genki 2), but was fully restored as a Ritsu-in (Vinaya school temple) in 1711 CE (Shōtoku 1) when Hongen Fusetsu became the abbot. The current hall was built through the efforts of the Soga family of Kii Province, with the main residence of the Oda clan of the Uda-Matsuyama Domain in Yamato Province relocated to the site.
