In 833 CE (Jōwa 10), Sugawara no Michizane visited the site and used the bow rope of a boat as a seat, which became the origin of the name 'Tsunashiki' (Rope Spreading). In 923 CE (Shōryaku 4), the spirit of Michizane was enshrined here in a joint worship ceremony. The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1956 after being destroyed in the Osaka air raids.
