Founded in 1764 CE (Meiwa 1) by Gekkai Jo-in. The creation of the 500 arhat statues began prior to the temple's founding during the Genbun era (1736–1740 CE). Initiated following consultations with officials from the Omori Daikansho (administrative office), the statues were completed over a 25-year period by the stone masons of Tsubuchi Heishichi and his school from Onsenzu. In 2007, the site was registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape.'
