It is said that the temple originated when Yoshitsune's beloved concubine, Tomoe Gozen, built a grass hut to offer prayers for his soul after his death. It was revived during the Sengoku period by Rokkaku Yoshikata. During the Edo period, Jodo sect monk Shojyu established Yoshitsune's grave and renamed the temple Gichu-ji. In the Showa era, donations from benefactors allowed the temple to become independent and be re-established as the current standalone temple.
