In the 2nd year of the Meiji era (1869 CE), it was renamed 'Suwa Shrine', and in the 15th year of Meiji (1882 CE), it was renamed 'Tamagawa Shrine' after the merger with Hie Shrine (Hie Jinja). In the 10th year of Meiji (1877 CE), the first elementary school in Hamura was built within the shrine grounds.
