The temple's origins are said to date back to 1179 CE (Jisho 3), when the warrior Saito Betto Mitsuhiro established a Shiten palace to enshrine the Great Shiten Kanjiten as a protective deity. In 1197 CE (Kenkyu 8), the monk and high priest Ryo-o established Kanjiin Chogaku-ji as the associated temple. It was later revived by Tokugawa Ieyasu, but the original structures were destroyed in a major fire in 1670 CE (Kanbun 10). The current Seiten-do Hall was rebuilt between the Kyo-ho and Ho-reki eras (1716-1736 CE).
