Seifukuji
福岡市博多区御供所町6−1
Known as Japan's first full-fledged Zen temple, the temple grounds are designated as a National Historic Site. The layout of the reconstructed buildings from the Edo period exemplifies the typical arrangement of Zen temples.
History
Founded by Eison as Japan's first full-fledged Zen temple, it was established after Eison returned from Song China and received land from Minamoto no Yoritomo of the Kamakura Shogunate. During the Edo period, it became part of the Myoshin-ji school by order of Kuroda Nagamasa, a status it maintains to this day. Although the temple was repeatedly destroyed by fire during times of war, it was rebuilt under the patronage of Kobayakawa Takakage and through the revival efforts of Mifune Genyu.
