Nohokuji Temple
神戸市兵庫区北逆瀬川町1−39
A Tendai sect temple located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, known for the Hyogo Daibutsu (Great Buddha of Hyogo), one of the three great Buddhas of Japan.
History
According to tradition, the temple was founded in 785 CE (Enryaku 24) when Saicho, upon landing, received donations from commoners and enshrined a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), naming it Nohoku Gokoku Mitsuji (Nohoku State-Protecting Esoteric Temple). It is also known as the site of Taira no Kiyomori's renunciation of the world and the burial place of his remains, flourishing as a prayer temple for the Taira clan. Despite repeated destruction by war and earthquakes, it has been rebuilt and restored to its present state.

The temple grounds feature the Hyogo Daibutsu, considered one of the three great Buddhas of Japan, which is a prominent landmark visible from outside. An image of Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon) is located at the feet of the Great Buddha, and Bishamonten (Vaisravana) is enshrined in the main hall, though these are not usually open to public viewing. The temple is within walking distance of JR Hyogo Station and offers Goshuin (a temple's calligraphic seal stamp).
