Rinzaiji Temple

A Zen temple of the Myoshinji branch of the Rinzai school, known as the family temple of the Imagawa clan. It is also recognized as the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu received his education, and it houses the memorial tablets and graves of successive Imagawa heads.

Its predecessor was Zentokuin, established by Imagawa Ujichika during the Joroku era for his son, Sen'gaku Shoho, who had entered monastic life. In the fifth year of the Tenbun era (1546), Imagawa Yoshimoto renamed the temple Rinzaiji when burying Udhikira. He appointed Daiso Shuko as the founding abbot and invited Taiyuan Setsu Sai to serve as the second abbot. Restoration and maintenance efforts advanced during the era of Tokugawa Ieyasu, leading to the reconstruction of the main hall that remains today.
