History
Founded during the Eiroku period by Shinabemaru Owari-no-kami of the Shinano clan, who invited the monk Shoryu Shoshun from Chonen-ji in Murota, Ueno Province, to serve as the founding abbot. The temple was established in Shinabemaru Village, Azumi District. In the first year of the Genki period, Takeda Shingen issued a decree regarding the new regulations for Soto sect temples. Following the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement in the early Meiji period, the temple was re-established at its current location in 1883, and its mountain name was changed from Sumiyoshi-zan to Kokugo-zan.
