Koshō-ji
京都市下京区堀川通七条
The head temple of the Shinshū Kōshō-ha sect of Buddhism, located in Hanazono-machi, Shimogyō-ku, Kyoto. Situated immediately south of Nishi Hongan-ji, it boasts a large temple complex that is often mistaken for part of Nishi Hongan-ji's own grounds.
History
Originally a sub-temple (wakamonnin) of Nishi Hongan-ji, it became independent as the head temple of the Shinshū Kōshō-ha in 1876. Temple tradition holds that it was effectively founded by the 7th abbot, Ryōgen. Various theories exist regarding its origins, including the hypothesis that Shinran returned to Kyoto to establish it, and the origin of its name based on an imperial edict granted by Emperor Go-Daigo. In 1481 (Bunmei 13), the 14th abbot, Keigō, merged with the Hongan-ji sect and established a new Koshō-ji in Yamashina.
