During the reign of Emperor Suinin, the area where Ohikumamimi-no-Mikoto landed his boat to pacify the Hokuriku region was named Funatsu (Boat Landing). In 134 CE, a shrine was established to enshrine him. It subsequently received protection from Emperor Keitai, the Asakura clan, and the lords of the Fukui Domain. After the establishment of the Sabae Domain, it flourished as a place of prayer for the Mabuchi family and as the tutelary shrine for the surrounding area. Although destroyed by war, the current main hall (honden) was donated by the fifth domain lord, Mabuchi Nobuyuki, and is designated as a cultural property of Fukui Prefecture.
