It is said that the temple complex was constructed by the monk Chōren Hōin Shōyo and named Shōgunzan Jizō-in. While the origins of Shōgunzan Jizō Bosatsu (Bodhisattva) date back to the Heian period, the worship of the deity spread among the common people from the Kamakura period onward, where it was revered for providing protection in times of danger on the battlefield.
