The founding date is unknown, but it is said that during the Bunji era, Komatsu Buzen-no-kami Heishimori worshipped Benzaiten and enshrined her spirit in a giant rock. In 1916 (Taisho 5), Ikotani Shrine and Toraiishi Shrine were merged into this shrine, which was then renamed Eshima Shrine. The shrine's name derives from the Enoshima Benzaiten Shrine in Sagami.
