History
Founded in 1878 (Meiji 11), its origins lie in a shrine dedicated to pacifying spirits that enshrined Mito Domain retainers who died after the Bakumatsu period and war dead from Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1941 (Showa 16), it was designated as a Kokugukan (National Shrine for the War Dead) by the Minister of Home Affairs and relocated to its current site on Sakurayama Hill within Kairakuen. After the defeat in World War II, it was renamed Sakurayama Shrine, but reverted to its original name in 1954.
