History
This shrine is considered the former general mausoleum of Kagoshima. In ancient times, during the spring equinox week every two years, a temporary palace was established at Arata Beach, and portable shrines were paraded around the boundaries of Arata Village at the Zuishin Hei (subordinate spirit shrines) in a ritual known as Hachiman Sakai Meguri. Currently, the ritual of Mikage Meguri Koshi Toyo (parade of the portable shrine around the sacred precincts) is performed on a date close to the regular festival.
