The temple's origins are said to date back to 812 CE (Kōnin 3), when Kōbō Daishi enshrined the spirit of Yamato Takeru. It is considered formally established in 1195 CE (Kanchi 1), when Hōryō discovered an image of the Eleven-Faced Kannon and constructed a hall. After declining in the medieval period, it was revived in 1633 CE (Kan'ei 10) with the support of Kasuga no Tsubone, following a prayer by Arasawa Junkai for the opening of the eyes and complete healing of the statue. In 1691 CE (Genroku 4), it became a branch temple of Mount Kōya and was renamed Takayama.
