The exact date of the head shrine's founding is unknown. It was formerly known as Tenshō Shrine (Tenman Shrine). In February of the 6th year of the Meiji era (1873), it was renamed Matsuyama Shrine. On September 30 of the 25th year of the Meiji era (1892), it was further renamed to its current name. In August of the 50th year of the Shōwa era (1975), major renovations were carried out on the main hall (honden), the heiden (offering hall), and the worship hall (haiden).
