History
The shrine was established shortly after the death of Sugawara no Michizane. During the Kamakura period, it was divided into northern and southern shrines; this shrine, corresponding to the southern site, was known as the Tenjin Gosho or the Hakubaiden Shrine. After the Onin War, it was revived in 1614 CE (Keicho 19) by Prince Michinaga, a member of the Sugawara family and abbot of Manshu-in. The old main hall, built in 1835 CE (Tenpo 6) in the Sanga-shayuki-zukuri style, was relocated in 1869 CE (Meiji 2) and now features a Yatsu-mune-zukuri roof structure.
