Since ancient times, it has enjoyed strong devotion from both the imperial court and military families. In 940 CE (Tenpyo 3), it was granted the divine rank of Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade. In 1896 (Meiji 29), it was elevated to the status of a Kokhei-sho (Minor National Shrine).
