Its origins date back to the reign of Emperor Keikō. It is said to have been established as 'Fuyaya Dai Myojin' (Great Deity of the Blowing Arrow) by Prince Yamato Takeru during his pacification of the eastern provinces. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu was enshrined there, and the shrine buildings were rebuilt. After the Meiji era, the shrine was relocated to its current site. The shrine buildings were destroyed in the 1945 Okazaki air raid but were subsequently rebuilt.
