Founded in 868 CE (Seikan 10) by the monk Henso as a temple with a fixed number of monks, it was designated as an imperial temple by Emperor Saga in 877 CE (Gange 1) and renamed Gangeji. In 986 CE (Kanka 2), it became the former site of Emperor Kazan's renunciation of the throne. It is also called Kazanji because it housed a portrait of Emperor Kazan. The temple complex was destroyed during the Onin War, but was rebuilt between 1789 CE (Kansei 1) and 1792 CE (Kansei 4).
