Founded in 1256 CE (Kenchō 8) by Chiba Suke Raijin as a Shingon sect temple named Dainichi-ji, it was later relocated to Chiba City during the time of Hōjō Sadaie. Subsequently, Chiba Suke Mitsunobu invited Kuten Shūman, a senior disciple of the monk Musō Soseki, to the temple, and in 1381 CE (Kōryaku 3), it was re-established as Manmanji of the Rinzai school. It was a major temple that received donations of temple lands when Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the Kantō region.
