The shrine was founded when Shunsei, the first head of the Kama clan, invited the kami from Usa Hachimangu due to his connection with his biological mother. After the Kama clan was defeated by the Shimazu clan during the Sengoku period, the shrine buildings were rebuilt by Shimazu Yoshihiro. The structures were severely damaged by a typhoon in 1985 (Showa 60) and subsequently rebuilt. The following year, the shrine changed its name to its current title, Kama Ushu Hachiman Shrine.
