History

The shrine was founded when Shunsei, the first head of the Kama clan, invited the kami from Usa Hachimangu due to his connection with his biological mother. After the Kama clan was defeated by the Shimazu clan during the Sengoku period, the shrine buildings were rebuilt by Shimazu Yoshihiro. The structures were severely damaged by a typhoon in 1985 (Showa 60) and subsequently rebuilt. The following year, the shrine changed its name to its current title, Kama Ushu Hachiman Shrine.

What visitors say

The vermilion shrine buildings are beautiful, and a giant camphor tree, claimed to be the largest in Japan, stands tall within the grounds. Ascending the wide stone steps leads to an area filled with sacred air, characterized by a serene atmosphere in harmony with nature. While there is free parking on the premises, drivers should exercise caution as the road is narrow and sloped. Goshuin (calligraphic seal stamps) are provided as pre-written copies.
