The temple is traditionally said to have been founded by the Bodhisattva Gyoki. Kobo Daishi (Kukai) carved the main statue, the Yakushi Nyorai of Disaster Removal, in a single stroke, imbuing it with his vow for the removal of misfortune for himself and others. During a fire in the 4th year of Bunji (1188 CE), the main statue is said to have flown away to Tamadokoro-yama (Jewel Chamber Mountain) to escape the disaster. When the temple was rebuilt, the statue flew back and entered the reliquary facing backward (known as the Goho Yakushi, or Backward-Facing Medicine Buddha).
