The temple is said to have been founded in 815 CE (Kōnin 6) when Kūkai carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) and built a hall to pray for the dispelling of his own misfortune and the peace of all sentient beings. During the Tenshō period, the temple was burned down by the troops of Chōsokabe Motochika. It was revived in 1674 CE (Enpō 2) by the Zen master Nanzan Sōdan and converted to the Rinzai sect. Later, in 1832 CE (Tenpō 3), a fire destroyed everything except the main image. The temple was rebuilt in 1860 CE (Man'en 1), resulting in the current layout of the temple grounds.
