It is said to have been enshrined in 766 CE (Tenpyo Shingo 1). In 1812, it was renamed Arutsu Myo Shrine, and in 1868, it was renamed to its current name, Arutsu Shrine. In 1873, it became a village shrine of Minato Village, Nishimuro District, after which it sequentially merged with Atago Shrine, Yasaka Shrine, Sumiyoshi Shrine, and Hachiman Shrine.
