生きたまま観音浄土を目指す補陀洛渡海の出発点として知られる寺。紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道の一部として世界遺産に登録されている。

世界遺産の一部として登録されている寺院で、境内には補陀洛渡海で用いられたとされる渡海船の復元が置かれています。隣接する熊野三所大神社とともに参拝でき、無料駐車場も整備されています。本堂では御朱印や御守りの授与が行われています。
